Military Bands and the State Department

John Nagl has often quipped that it is difficult for the State Department to do its job when there are more members of military bands than there are Foreign Service officers.

Kip isn't sure that this is exactly how Herr Nagl wished the equation addressed:

Fortunately, the soldiers will be all right...

Oh goodness... I about broke a rib from laughing so hard.

I hear there was also a tuba that was destroyed in the incident.

And yeah, as far as comedic effect goes, you couldn't have scripted that any better.

Is it bad that I laughed hardest when they called for the medic?

On a vaguely related note, the State Department actually got some money this week! The intent is for them to start up the Civilian Response Core in earnest:

Not to worry though, even factoring these additional resources, and the above injuries, there should still be more folks in the band...

But can the bands maintain their numbers if fat white guys keep skydiving?

Standby for the CBB (Combat Band Badge). A.M staff to write the citation.

"Heroically breaking his fall, sacraficing his tuba in the..."

I'm sorry, I couldn't help it.

Does the parachutist get a reprimand or an award (he paints a tuba on the side of his chute).

You know, in previous wars, the band members also served as stretcher bearers.

They would've carried out their own KIAs and WIAs on their stretchers, not their tubas.

This system lasted surprisingly long, well into Vietnam, before the inevitable specialization in all military disciplines created a musical MOS.

Amusingly, the division band was one of the few things I remember from the distance learning portion of Battle Staff. The division band's war time mission at the time was to be a guard force for prisoners and part of the QRF for DIVMAIN.
