Moral Courage in the Foreign Service
From TNR's, The Plank: The diplomats involved in the incident at a roadblock on the edge of the capital, Harare, had just completed a tour of hospitals and an alleged torture camp when police demanded they prove they had official permission to visit the sites. At one point, a police officer threatened to beat one of Mr. McGee’s senior aides. The officer got into his car and lurched toward Mr. McGee after he had demanded the officer’s name. The car made contact with Mr. McGee’s shins, but he was not injured. Mr. McGee climbed onto the hood of the car while his aide snatched the keys from the ignition, then the diplomats used their mobile phone cameras to take photographs of the officer. Mr. McGee insisted the convoy be allowed through and the 11 vehicles passed through after about an hour.
You probably haven't heard of James McGee. He's our Ambassador in Harare, Zimbabwe. He's also a black man, which frustrates the sick worldview of Robert Mugabe. Here's an excerpt from a news story earlier this week that made me smile:
The men and women of the foreign service put themselves through great sacrifice, but rarely do we hear of stories like this in which an actual Ambassador would put his own life on the line to send a message to a totalitarian, murderous regime: America is watching you.
Indeed. There's a pretty standard line offered by foreign service officers recounting the number of ambassadors killed in the line of duty vs. the number of general officers. (Charlie can't remember the former, but the latter is something approximating "zero since WWII.") Not all ambassadors spend their time at cocktail parties, and not all of America's influence comes from the barrel of a gun (but check out Jamie's novel suggestion for an Africom mission at the end of his post).

That can't be true, Charlie. CSA Casey's father smashed an airplane into a Vietnamese mountain, and he was a MG, if I recall.
He's buried in Arlington.

Maj. Gen. Bruno Hochmuth, USMC, died when his chopper was shot down in Vietnam.
According to the nonprofit "The Wall-USA," the names of 12 MGs, RAs or BGs/Commodores are etched in DC's Vietnam memorial (7 Army, 1 Navy, 3 USAF, 1 USMC, 0 USCG).

In Korea, LTG Walker was killed in an automobile accident, but I can't think of any others and don't have the time to go to the National Archives and puzzle it out.
But your larger point is probably right.
SNLII--you are of course correct. Perhaps the original quote was "GO's killed since *Vietnam*".
Always fun to blog without fact checking...
Joe Wilson in Iraq in 1991.
I think it's post-Korea, pre-Vietnam...
I'd need to go to the State Department (or Defense Department) Historian, but John Naland, American Foreign Service Association President, wrote to Richard Pearle a while back: ".... Indeed, I invite Mr. Perle to visit the Department of State this coming Friday, May 9, to witness the addition of six more names to the AFSA Memorial Plaques honoring American diplomats who have died in the line of duty while serving our nation abroad. Those plaques now contain 215 names. As a Pentagon advisor, Mr. Perle might be particularly interested in the fact that, in the last half century, more U.S. Ambassadors than generals and admirals have died in the line of duty."

Joe Wilson is alive and well, as his wife Valerie "so much for my career at the CIA" Plame will attest.
Indeed. I am often impressed by the courage of our Foreign Service Officers. One of the websites that demonstrates this best, I think, is a blog run by some an anymous member of the FS. Not unlike this blog, when I think about it. Save of course, that it deals with issues facing diplomats, not soldiers.

Hmmm That came out weird. The blog's title, "Diplopunidt" seems to be missing there, and the much of more of that was highlighted than there should have been. Stupid HTML.
Great post.
Good post. And I too am a fan of Diplopundit.
I have quoted and commented on your post at http://lifeafterjerusalem.blogspot.com/2008/05/in-praise-of-our-ambassador-to-zimbabwe.html
It is nice when someone stands up to a bully and does the right thing and everyone cheers for them. But this person, the good Ambo was standing up to was a Officer of the Law in a Foreign Country, who may have been just doing his job. I would like to have seen this entire situation unfold myself.
Sure the country has got a lot of problems, but it doesn't mean that we can ignore the laws and disrespect law enforcement in a foreign country, because of what's going on in the big picture.
If the shoe were on the other foot, and a foreign Ambo were in the US and this person acted the same way and refused to comply with the requests and questions from the officer, I think things would have turned out much differently. Perhaps, escalating up the force continuum to the point of physical force being used and a diplomat being detained (notice, I didn't say arrested). He's a very luck that things didn't turn out differently.
I would be curious to know where the Ambo's security detail was at the time he was jumping around a moving vehicle and failing to comply with the requests of a Foreign National Police Officer. For press like this to get in the paper ....ummm i dunno.....it could be good or bad.
Did this person show his Diplomatic Passport or other credentials at the time he was questioned? Did he fail to comply in answering any questions when he was given a field interview by this officer? Was the police officer disrespectful or doing anything illegal to warrant the Ambo to not comply?
Sure, the Ambo has Diplomatic Immunity, but it doesn't mean he doesn't have to identify himself and prove that he hasn't broken any laws. Situations like this could cause a person to be come Persona Non Grata.... Let's hope that doesn't happen, as I would think our Mr. James McGee is a man of great integrity, he's a wonderful public servant and has got some very large balls.
God Bless ya McGee....You're my Bud Light Real Man of Genius Winner of the week. Thank God you didn't get run over...perhaps your Iron Balls stopped the car?
BTW- lets not ramble on about dead Generals and lets remember those who have fallen in the FS Ranks.
Here's a wall of names who were brave enough to try and make this world a better place. (humming the Real Men of Genius song)

FYI- the best one on the AFSA wall is: Pulmonary Embolism following sniper wound. Now that's some crazy s&%$ to have a heart attack and then get shot....definitely a bad day.
Charlie, do you like making former Marine's drool? (wiping my lip) Don't make me pull a 4G Negative Dive on ya. :) Let me know when you wanna have a cigar and glass of single malt with me. ;)
Why doesn't someone in the FS Ranks run down to "Chop Chop Square" in Riyadh on Friday, to try and save a person's life who might be innocent?
Also, what do you think would happen if they tried to take the executioner's photo, with a cell phone, as he cuts someone's hands or head off? What do you think the headlines would read?
Think about that one for a while and get back to me.
Here's the "MSM article":http://www.thelistproject.org/index.html/ on the subject. The official account was understated to say the least.
Whoops. My bad. The actual link is: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/africa/article3927730.ece
Sorry about that, although the other link is a worthy cause.
Lt Gen Maude was killed at his office in the Pentagon 11 Sep 2001
Your link is too long snowflake. Obviously you've never posted on this website before ya slacker.
I've quoted you and linked to you here: http://consul-at-arms.blogspot.com/2008/05/re-in-praise-of-james-mcgee.html
