In related news, JAM announces 1,300 new recruits
Yes, Abu Muqawama understands the usual blogging thing means he reads an article in the news he thinks is important and then provides some commentary, but in this case, Abu Muqawama isn't sure what to make of this news:
So this is a good thing. Right? It's good the Iraqi government is holding people responsible. But Abu Muqawama's question is, where will these 1,300 guys go? Will they go work in the local mill? Or will they stomp off to go join JAM or another militia?BAGHDAD — The Iraqi government has dismissed 1,300 soldiers and policemen who deserted or refused to fight during last month’s Shiite-on-Shiite battles in Basra, it said Sunday.
The announcement followed the admission that more than 1,000 members of the security forces had laid down their weapons during the fight, which Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki characterized as a campaign to restore law and order to Basra, a strategic and oil-rich southern city.
Maj. Gen. Abdul-Karim Khalaf, an Interior Ministry spokesman, said 500 soldiers and 421 policemen were fired in Basra, including 37 senior police officers up to the rank of brigadier general. Police officials said the remainder were fired in Kut.
“Some of them were sympathetic with these lawbreakers, some refused to battle for political or national or sectarian or religious reasons,” General Khalaf told The Associated Press in Basra.

I had the same impression...I suspect this may be a quick an easy way for al-Malaki to get rid of non-sympathetic persons within the military and police, further skewing the trend towards a 'militia' army largely loyal to him.
Ill be interested in hearing wether this is a tribe-thing or a military issue. It would also be interesting to hear if this is a cohesive unit getting dismissed or a general culling of individuals. Their level of training is another issue: Did "we" just give JAM 1300 fully western trained soldiers? Did they get a new tribal alliance in the south? Etc.
Soldiernolonger?
Abu M: BTW, when is it that the US is planning to fit in time to invade Nepal? Now that the terrorists have won a landslide election, I mean?
I hope they can make sure that all the ex-employees hand in all issued guns, uniforms, radios, keys to the armoury....
It is worth mentioning that Bill Roggio notes the 500 army deserters were in large part from one unit, the 52nd Brigade. This brigade had just graduated from basic training and was not due to be stood up until June, but it was rushed into the Basra combat where it cracked.

Anyone know where to find info on tribal structures inside the Iraqi Army? Because the whole Basra-event smelled like a mob-war gone bad to me. Someone in Basra cut a deal with someone in Baghdad etc. This is like threedimensional chess. The mind boggles.
"You can't quit, we fire you!" The voice of real authority. :\ Wasn't there a time when deserters during combat were supposed to be shot?
The even more traditional response would be to decimate said Brigade.

fnord -- I have looked for this, with no luck. The best I have found is an Order of Battle for the various Iraq security forces, maintained by the Long War Journal.
http://www.longwarjournal.org/oob/index.php
It lists Kurdish units, but has no other description of units ethnic, sectarian, or regional origins or loyalties.
