Abu Muqawama is a blog dedicated to following issues related to contemporary insurgencies as well as counterinsurgency tactics and strategy. Abu Muqawama aims to be a resource for students, counterinsurgents, academics, and the general public.
I wasn't going to comment because it would make me sound like an A-1 dweeb, but Clifford Geertz actually always has been my "favorite anthropologist." He was a titan in his field and a brilliant writer.
I think you might be joking because Geertz's fieldwork transpired in Islamic Morocco and Indonesia (I'm going to go home tonight and reread "Balinese Cockfight" to savor its genius), and he was a Navy veteran of WWII, serving in the North Atlantic.
Dr. McFate has some substantial and legitimate objections to Newsweek's article, but imo this is not a smack-down. Her major points are mixed in with petty ankle-bites, for a weak overall effect.
To give one of many examples:
"Social scientists earn "$300,000" a year - Overstated. This is true only if hazard pay, overtime, and danger pay are included. The base salary is a low six figures."
This is really weak. Not only is it not a correction in any meaningful sense, people earning six figures seldom get overtime pay.
This would have been more serious if phrased as something like "their salary is low six figures, but they of course get extra pay for as appropriate for dangers and hazards.
Well, what I took away from this was that soldiers are not qualified to do whatever it is our tax dollars are going for here and that only very highly qualified and paid civilians can do it.
I also got the impressible that Montgomery McFate is an insufferable prig who will likely have rough sledding if he presents himself to any GIs the way he does in this letter.
One would like to think that this PhD and JD combination (why am I not surprised?) did not write this letter while on the U.S. Government clock. But we know better, don't we?
What a splendid trough this war on terruh has turned out to be.
Also,Publius, the purpose of HTS is to introduce a non-military, academic, social science perspective to the AO. Like everything else, the program is, IMO, assisted by being interdisciplinary, and combining military assessments with academic ones.
What's up with a woman with a first name of "Montgomery?" Point taken, however.
Anonymous: Please enlighten me as to what's gained by spending tax dollars to "introduce a non-military, academic, social science perspective to the AO." Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the said "AO" actually kind of like, you know, a combat zone?
One wonders exactly what is gained by doing such things in such an absolute disaster of a nation, in the middle of a war. But, then, I'm just looking at this as a dumb-ass GI who's not sure how anything in the "AO" would not have a military flavor. Clearly, I'm incapable of understanding the higher purpose. I'm sure those tax dollars are being well spent.

He volunteered.
I think Montgomery McFate would've approved.
By the way, Abu M, this is what all the kids are talking about today. Click on my name for more details.
