Afghanistan a failed state? (Again?)
From David Axe over at Danger Room:
"Afghanistan risks sliding into a failed state and becoming the "forgotten war" because of deteriorating international support and a growing violent insurgency, according to an independent study:"The US tried to goad NATO into sending more troops and ended up sending 3000 of its own Marines. Last Charlie checked, that's not an option for Canada. Will NATO call their bluff, too? If so, we might just have to relegate them to the Warsaw-Pact-dustbin-of-history. Because, man, they are so not worth the trouble. The assessment, co-chaired by retired Marine Corps Gen. James Jones and former U.N. Ambassador Thomas Pickering, serves as a warning to the Bush administration at a time military and congressional officials are debating how best to juggle stretched warfighting resources.
This at a time when Canada -- one of the ass-kickingest members of the Afghanistan coalition -- is threatening to pull out its troops if other NATO members don't pony up more soldiers, choppers and cash. Such a move by Canada could undermine NATO's relevance in a post-Soviet world, some say. The U.S. is promising a few thousand extra Marines, but as The Netherlands proved this summer, a battalion-sized commitment and a handful of deaths are all that many NATO nations will tolerate.
And Germany? Don't get me started on Germany ...
Update: More from Kings of War:
I think a week from now will be make or break time for NATO in Afghanistan. Reports suggest that the seriousness of the issue is recognized and that 10 countries have agreed to boost the numbers of their troops on the ground. That’s good news, to be sure; but where will they be deployedand what operational restrictions will be placed on their employment?

Afghanistan was never a successful state (or nation).
This has been a long time coming. The bottom line is that the U.S. is willing to sacrifice NATO for Afghanistan. The only question is will the rest of NATO realize that in time?
As an aside, a buddy of mine from junior high is one of the 3000 Marines getting sent.
As stated elsewhere, Norway have approx 800, and are sending SF (150+) down there soon. But yes, politically we can scrap NATO. We would be happy to.
EU could become the engine of the UN, and cooperate with the new emerging regional models that copy it. There was a conference here on tuesday arranged by NUPI that had representatives from EU, UNASUR, MERCOSUR,AU and ASEAN together. Sorry for the caps-glare, but its how its spelled. Its a very interesting powerblock, and it makes the US look kinda like a dinosaur. With all due respect.
Good riddance. Less interests to babysit.
yup. Godamn, that I should witness both the fall of NATO and of the Soviet..
fnord,
I think you will miss Norway. The regional model is an empire of paralyzed bureaucrats without the legitmacy of either conquest or having been elected by mandate.
oh and if you want to be the engine of the UN...by all means. Do get them out of NYC while your at it. You can put up with their kleptocratic, criminal and sexually molesting ways.
The only regional government you are going to midwife is called the caliphate.
I agree with all...NATO's days are numbered. Then again, why extend it past it's original purpose...the Soviets are 20 years gone.
elf: You just shot your self out of serious discussions. Yadda yadda.
I would say that the US mistrust in the UN *must* somehow be transformed into enthusiasm and competence. Its the only tool that has functioned at all, COIN wise, when it comes to a shared agreement between the parts & putting it into action.
