COIN Academy Reading List

Small Wars Journal and your blogging team here at Abu Muqawama recently commented on the formation of the new U.S. Army Counterinsurgency (COIN) Academy in Afghanistan. We were particularly interested in the Academy’s pursuit of building a first-class COIN library.

So… SWJ and AM have decided to aid in building the library with a little help from our friends. We e-mailed the COIN Academy requesting their reading list. They responded with titles of books and movies that once in hand would go a long way in establishing a world-class COIN library.

To streamline our effort we have set up the Afghanistan COIN Library on Amazon.

The books and movies you purchase there and send on to Afghanistan will seed the COIN Academy’s library with a few titles that will allow the staff to better appreciate history, culture, and insurgency in Afghanistan. Eventually the titles will make their way to the library of the Afghan Defense University of which the COIN Academy will become a part. The shipping address (while hidden at Amazon) is direct to the Academy and we will track to ensure your book or movie makes it way to Afghanistan.

A tip of the hat to Small Wars Council member Carl (currently a private sector pilot in Iraq and blogger at Because We're Here Boy, No One Else; But Us) who started the ball rolling by e-mailing us an offer to send multiple copies of FM 3-24 to the Academy.

Thanks much for helping us out on this project. What do we get out of this? A pretty darn good COIN reading list!

Saw this over at SWJ. Cool effort. Would kick in my share now but since I'm a poor college student funds are a little tight. Will do as soon as the back pay check comes for the raise in my AFROTC stipend that was supposed to happen 3 months ago. Damn military bureaucracy.

A great idea! Well done. Have copied this to Kings of War

Now I must go to Amazon...

Mike--no worries (and there appear to be some pretty cheap paperbacks on the list, for what it's worth).

Dave--many thanks! We really appreciate it.

Indeed a superb initiative this. I really hope it takes off. I've just purchased John Nagl's great comparative study of Malaya and Vietnam, and David Galula's classic for the COIN Academy.

Did notice that on a second look through. Thanks.

You guys are amazing. Judging from early returns, I think we're going to build up quite a library. Charlie and I will do our best to send reports back from the COIN Academy when they start receiving the books.

You can track the progress of the reading list on Amazon, too: just click "purchased" from the "show me" drop down menu on the wishlist page.

As of 2 seconds ago we have 17 books + 9 copies of the field manual (chicago edition). Not bad for a morning's work!

Just sent two off.

For books available only from 3rd party vendors (not Amazon) when items are taken to checkout -- process stops at customer's personal address list with this message:

"Important Message

Some Amazon customers have allowed us to share their shipping addresses with third-party merchants so all orders from their Wish List and gift registries can be fulfilled. If you are purchasing a third-party item off the Wish List or gift registry of a customer who has not given us this permission, you may need to provide us with their shipping address yourself."

Thanks for letting us all know about the effort. I've added a link to my blog, and will be donating myself.

Hate to be dense, but not familiar with Amazon wish lists. If I make a buy, does Amazon already have shipping address, etc on file? How does this work? As an alternative, is there some kind of PayPal option available to make a donation for this project?

Chris said...

pn nj,

Amazon wishlists ship the purchases directly to the address of the wishlist owner. In this case, a partial address is listed in the top left corner of the wishlist web page.

We gave permission for Amazon to share the address with 3rd-party merchants.

All - thanks much for backing this effort!

Thanks Charlie, I am familiar with the status check but just worried about the one I ordered from a seperate vendor as it may take a little longer and there is no real way to track. Once this list is 'complete' for the books that had only one requested will we be able to send more? Just curious as my meager Air Force SSgt paycheck will be out again in a weeks time and I'd like to contribute more.

We've posted this at Winds of Change.NET to spread the word, and I may do a piece over at Defense Industry Daily.

Pity SWJ doesn't also have something going with some of the other countries - I bet the Dutch, British, and Canadian contingents would all be very appreciative as well.
