COIN Education

And now, a short administrative announcement from the folks who bring you this blog:

This blog was first started to be a resource for all those out there looking to learn more about insurgency and counterinsurgency. Charlie is a long-time student of COIN who now teaches it to the U.S. military, and Abu Muqawama is a one-time practitioner of COIN who now studies it formally. The real mission of this blog is to pass along some of what we've studied and learned in the hopes that the readership might find some interest in it all. Accordingly, the two of us keep the Counterinsurgency Reading List updated and have now added a new section for the Counterinsurgency Book Club to the right.

Have fun hitting the books, and feel free to post something in the comments if we need to cover something you feel we've been ignoring. The goal is, always, to provide a service to the readership.

And to gossip about the Red Sox, of course, and bring you the news about the latest East Tennessee alien sightings.

What about some of the bush wars in Africa back in the 60's and 70's. I found The Elite The Story of the Rhodesian Special Air Service and The Selous Scouts Top Secert War. I found both of them when I was in Cape Town a few years back.

Abu- questin for you. Can one become a credible scholar in the field on COIN, if one has never served in the Armed forces? I am interestedin tis field, but was unable to join up due to being diagnosed with braincnacer duringmy senior year atthe Univof Michigan.

1. Ashley, I think we probably ignore sub-Saharan Africa on this site. Our bad. This is probably because I'm a Middle East specialist. Thanks for the book recommendation, though.

2. Danny, I very much think so. In fact, if only 20% of effective COIN is military, it follows that someone who is an expert in anthropology or post-state reconstruction might make a better COIN expert than a Marine. It's just the military happen to be the only ones who consistently seriously study COIN. When the military does study COIN, though, we rely on civilians to tell us about stuff we don't understand. Hell, I ask Charlie (who the military trusts to teach COIN to officers) about the inter-agency process all the time, because that's a big part of effective COIN. Go study political science or anthropology then. And get better!

Shukran, Abu!!!Thank s for your good wishes.
Thanks for answering my question.
My follow-up question is this- what kindof grad school ouhgt I be lookingat? My concern is this- say, if I wasnt to study atthe Univ of Michigan's History or Anthro or Ford Public Policy School or the PolySci Depts. Now, I doubt thatthereis onesingle prof in these depts who has any expertise or the willingness to the study of counter-insurgency relates subjects. Actually, Ibet the majority are very anti-American and anti-military in their personal and political orientation. Trying to do this kind of research at the Univ of Michigan, therefore, will be like trying to fight the entire at every step of the way. I doubt that will lead to any quality academic work.

Could you recommend a few grad schools/departments wehre the study of COIN will be encouraged, or at least tolerated? Where I dont have fight and try to justify my work every day.
However, if someone were to propose a PhD topic discussing the oppression suffered by overweight, atheist, black lesbians who also have a gimpy leg, you bet faculty would be fightng each other t ooffer thatstudent grants and fellowships etc. :):)
Y'all know what academia is like, dont you?
